A dental abscess is an infection that develops in or around a tooth. It can be very painful, but some infections cause surprisingly little pain. The American Association of Endodontists notes that symptoms may include mouth or jaw pain, pain while chewing, and swollen gums. AAE: Abscessed Teeth
Which symptoms need attention?
Call a dentist promptly for persistent toothache, pain when biting, localized gum swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gum, drainage, a bad taste, facial swelling, fever, or worsening tenderness. Symptoms alone cannot identify the exact source, so an examination and dental imaging when indicated may be needed.
Deep decay, cracks, trauma, failed restorations, or advanced gum disease can all be associated with infection.
Is a root canal always needed?
No. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and whether the tooth can be restored. When infection involves the pulp of a restorable tooth, root canal treatment may remove infected tissue and help preserve the tooth. AAE: What Is a Root Canal?
Other cases may require periodontal treatment, drainage, or extraction. Our root canal vs. extraction guide explains why restorability matters.
Are antibiotics enough?
Antibiotics can be appropriate in selected infections, especially when infection is spreading or medical factors increase risk, but they do not automatically remove the source inside a damaged tooth. Do not use leftover medication or delay dental treatment because pain temporarily improves.
When is it an emergency?
Seek emergency medical care for difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling. These can signal a spreading infection that requires urgent medical attention. NHS: Dental Abscess
