A dental crown can protect a weakened or damaged tooth, but it does not have one universal expiration date. The American Dental Association describes crowns as restorations used to strengthen or cover selected teeth, and the condition of the supporting tooth remains important. MouthHealthy: Crowns
What affects crown longevity?
The amount of healthy tooth structure, crown fit, bite forces, grinding, gum health, cavity risk, and daily cleaning can all influence how long a crown stays functional. Plaque can still collect around the crown margin, so brushing and cleaning between teeth remain important.
If you are deciding between restorations, our crown vs. filling guide explains why dentists consider how much tooth structure remains.
When should a crown be checked?
Contact your dentist if the crown feels loose, chips, hurts when you bite, develops persistent sensitivity, traps food differently, or seems to change your bite. These signs do not prove that the crown itself failed; the supporting tooth, gums, or a nearby tooth may be involved.
Does every old crown need replacement?
No. Age alone is not a diagnosis. A stable, cleanable crown supported by a healthy tooth may continue to be monitored. Replacement may be needed when there is recurrent decay, fracture, loss of seal, or damage to the supporting tooth.
Daily plaque control, regular examinations, and avoiding hard-object chewing can reduce avoidable risks. Patients who grind should follow the protection plan recommended after a proper evaluation.
Gateway Dental can evaluate existing crowns through restorative dentistry. Schedule at Coral Way or Hialeah if a crown feels different or is difficult to clean.
