A baby’s first dental visit usually happens earlier than many parents expect.

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling the first visit after the first tooth appears and no later than the child’s first birthday. MouthHealthy: Your Baby’s First Dental Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry similarly supports establishing a dental home within six months of the first tooth erupting and no later than 12 months of age. AAPD: Policy on Early Childhood Caries

Why visit so early?

Baby teeth can develop cavities soon after they erupt.

An early visit gives parents an opportunity to discuss:

  • Brushing
  • Fluoride
  • Feeding habits
  • Bottle and sippy-cup use
  • Teething
  • Pacifiers and thumb sucking
  • Injury prevention
  • Cavity risk

The purpose is not to perform complicated treatment. It is to start prevention before problems develop.

What happens during the first dental visit?

The visit is usually short and focused on making the child comfortable.

MouthHealthy explains that a parent may sit in the dental chair with the child on their lap while the dentist checks the teeth, gums, jaw, and mouth. MouthHealthy: Your Baby’s First Dental Visit

The dental team may:

  • Count and examine erupted teeth
  • Look for early signs of decay
  • Check oral development
  • Review brushing technique
  • Discuss diet and fluoride
  • Answer questions about habits and teething

What if the baby cries?

That is common.

A dental office is a new environment with unfamiliar lights, sounds, and people. Crying does not mean the visit failed.

The goal is a safe examination and a calm introduction to dental care.

How should parents prepare?

Choose a time when your child is usually rested rather than scheduling during a normal nap.

MouthHealthy recommends keeping the visit positive and avoiding language that may create fear. MouthHealthy: Healthy Habits for Babies and Kids

Helpful preparation includes:

  • Complete forms ahead of time when possible
  • Bring a medication and allergy list
  • Bring questions about feeding or brushing
  • Avoid using the dentist as a threat
  • Keep explanations simple and positive

When should brushing begin?

Start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts.

Use a small, soft toothbrush and an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste.

The dentist can show you the correct amount for your child’s age and help you choose a routine that is realistic at home.

Why do baby teeth matter if they eventually fall out?

Primary teeth help children chew, speak, and hold space for developing permanent teeth.

Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and may require treatment long before the tooth is naturally ready to fall out.

Early prevention is usually simpler than treating advanced decay.

Will the baby need dental X-rays?

Not every child needs X-rays at the first visit.

Dental radiographs are based on individual need, including disease risk, development, symptoms, and what can be seen during the examination.

Our guide on dental X-ray safety and frequency explains why there is no single schedule for every patient.

What about fluoride treatment?

Some children may benefit from professional fluoride varnish depending on age and cavity risk.

MouthHealthy describes fluoride varnish as a quick preventive treatment that strengthens tooth enamel. MouthHealthy: Mom’s Guide to Fluoride

The dentist can explain whether it is appropriate for your child.
